Dear Members of the Academic Community,

The Department of Intellectual Property of the Externado University of Colombia is pleased to announce the realization of its 18TH Annual Congress of Intellectual Property, on August 11 and 12, 2022.

On this occasion, the Congress will address a theme of global interest revived on October 21, 2021, when Facebook creator, Mark Zuckerberg, announced the renaming of his company to Meta. That day, he communicated the new direction the multinational enterprise would follow towards to what he called the metaverse. This has been a milestone marking moment in international technological markets.

The metaverse is based on virtual reality technologies which offer immersive experiences in digital universes parallel to everyday reality. It also involves augmented reality techniques which allow for the integration of digital objects into real physical spaces. In this sense, the metaverse presents itself as a new ecosystem with the capability to host activities related to entertainment, culture, work, education, business, among others. For this reason, expectations have arisen about the multiple applications of the metaverse. It is considered as well to be a new field for important investments.

With the purpose of offering an academic space for the analysis and discussion relating to this emerging digital project, our Department is organizing its Annual Congress oriented to the subject of the metaverse, the digital economy, and law. The objective is to offer the academic community an opportunity to reflect upon the possible advantages and vicissitudes that may derive due to the rise of virtual reality and augmented reality technologies.

In that sense, in the event various discussion panels will address, among others, the following topics in the context of the metaverse:

  • Concept of the metaverse and its impact on society and the economy.
  • Implications in legal and valuation terms on business transactions.
  • Opportunities and challenges in relation to trademark and patent protection.
  • Impact on competition law.
  • Possible issues regarding private international law.
  • Protection of creative industries through copyright and industrial property law.
  • Reflections from the perspectives of sociology, education, and communication sciences.

We are looking forward to count with the participation of panelists from both the public and private sectors, as well as with academics and practicing professionals whose contributions provide different perspectives to the subject of the Congress. The goal is to follow a comprehensive approach to the matter.

The event will take place on the site of the Externado University of Colombia, on August 11 and 12, 2022, from 8:00 am to 1:35 pm on the first day, and from 8:00 am to 1:20 pm on the second day. Streaming services will be available for those who wish to attend online.
